If your children are at school in the UK, February half term is often the only week you can ski without taking them out of class. It is also the busiest and most expensive week of the whole season. The good news is that with a bit of planning you can take a lot of the sting out of the price.
This guide covers when half term falls in 2027, why it costs more, which resorts tend to be better value, and the practical ways UK families keep the cost down.

The short version
- Most schools in England break up for February half term from Monday 15 to Friday 19 February 2027, but some areas take the week before. Check with your school.
- That week overlaps with French school holidays in two of France’s three zones, so French resorts will be busy.
- Book as early as you can. Peak week accommodation sells out and is rarely discounted at the last minute.
- On the mountain, Italy, Bulgaria and Andorra usually work out cheaper for families than France, Austria or Switzerland.
- Booking lift passes, ski hire and lessons online before you go, and self catering, are the biggest everyday savings.

When is February half term 2027?
There is no single national half term. Each local authority, and many academies, set their own dates. For 2027 the pattern looks like this:
| Where | Typical February 2027 half term |
|---|---|
| England (most areas) | Monday 15 to Friday 19 February |
| England (some areas and academies) | Monday 8 to Friday 12 February |
| Wales | Varies by council; some take 8 to 12 February |
| Scotland | Varies by council; some take a full week, others a two day break |
| Northern Ireland | Usually a short break around 11 to 12 February |
Always confirm with your own school or council before booking anything. The government’s school term and holiday dates finder will point you to your local authority. Ski holiday companies usually run their main half term departures on the Saturday and Sunday at the start of the week, which for most families in 2027 means 13 or 14 February.
If your school breaks up early, use it
If your children happen to get the earlier week (8 to 12 February), you may find resorts a little quieter, because most English families travel the following week. It is not guaranteed to be cheaper, but it is worth comparing prices for both weeks if you have the choice.
Why February half term costs more
It comes down to demand. Thousands of British families are trying to book the same week, and in France, the most popular destination for UK skiers, it clashes with local school holidays too. France splits its schools into three zones, and in 2027 the winter holidays run as follows, according to the French government’s official calendar:
| French school zone | Winter holidays 2027 | Overlaps with most English half terms? |
|---|---|---|
| Zone C (includes Paris) | 6 to 22 February | Yes |
| Zone A (includes Lyon) | 13 February to 1 March | Yes |
| Zone B | 20 February to 8 March | No |
In other words, during the week of 15 February you will be sharing the slopes with French families from two zones as well as everyone from home. Expect busier lift queues, fuller ski schools and higher prices for accommodation in particular.
For a full budget, see how much a family ski holiday costs in 2027.
What about going in term time instead?
Term time weeks in January or March are usually cheaper and quieter, but taking children out of school without permission can lead to a fine. In England, the current national rules set a penalty of £80 per parent, per child if paid within 21 days, rising to £160 if paid later, and a second penalty within three years is automatically £160. For two parents and two children, that is £320 at the lower rate. Councils explain the details on their own websites, for example Cornwall Council’s guide to the 2024 changes.
We would not suggest planning around a fine, but it helps to know the real numbers when you compare a term time trip with half term prices.
Which resorts are better value for families?
The Post Office Ski Resort Report 2026 is one of the most useful comparisons. It prices a week of lift passes, ski and boot hire and ski school for a family of two adults and two children (aged six and eight), using December 2025 prices for a mid season week. It does not include flights or accommodation, but it gives a good feel for how much the mountain itself will cost.
| Resort | Country | Family cost on the mountain (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Passo Tonale | Italy | £1,797 |
| Bardonecchia | Italy | £1,984 |
| Bansko | Bulgaria | £2,093 |
| Kranjska Gora | Slovenia | £2,117 |
| Arinsal | Andorra | £2,441 |

Two things stand out. Italy dominates the good value list, and no French resort made the report’s family top ten. Austrian resorts sit at the expensive end, with Saalbach the dearest for families.
That does not mean France is out of reach. France is easy to get to from the UK, has huge linked ski areas, and has plenty of purpose built resorts where you can ski from the door, which makes life with children much easier. You just need to be more careful with the extras.

When to book
For half term, earlier really is better. The most convenient accommodation, the best value flights and the ski school slots that suit young children are the first things to go. Many families book in the spring or summer before. Unlike quieter weeks, half term rarely sees genuine last minute bargains, because demand is so high.
If you are booking flights and accommodation separately, try to secure the accommodation first. Flights from the UK to the Alps are numerous, but good family apartments close to the lifts are not.
How to find genuine February half term ski deals
Real half term bargains are rare, because demand is so high. Most of the savings come from how you book rather than from last minute offers. These are the approaches most likely to bring the price down:
- Price the same week both ways. Compare a package with booking flights, transfers and accommodation yourself. Our guide to package or DIY ski holidays shows how to compare fairly.
- Be flexible on the airport and day. A Sunday departure, or flying from a different regional airport, is sometimes cheaper than the busiest Saturday flights, so compare a few options.
- Look beyond the famous names. Smaller or less fashionable resorts often cost less for the same week, as the resort comparison above shows.
- Book early. The best value apartments and flights go first, and early booking offers are usually better than anything left in January.
- Watch operators’ half term pages. Tour operators publish their school holiday offers, so you can compare them with your own DIY total.

Practical ways to cut the cost
1. Be flexible on how you travel
Flying from a regional airport such as Manchester or Birmingham can save a long drive to London. Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble and Chambéry all serve the French Alps, and each suits different resorts. Remember to budget for ski carriage if you take your own equipment, and for the transfer from the airport to the resort, which can cost as much as the flight.
Driving is worth considering for a family of four. You can take as much luggage as fits in the car, the fuel is shared between everyone, and you will have a car in resort for supermarket runs. It is a long trip though, so plan an overnight stop.
The train is another option. Eurostar Snow runs on selected Saturdays from London St Pancras, changing in Lille, to stations in the Tarentaise valley including Moûtiers, Aime-La-Plagne, Landry and Bourg-Saint-Maurice. For 2026/27 it runs outbound between 19 December 2026 and 20 February 2027, with one way fares advertised from £99 and ski equipment carried free.

We compare the options in detail in our guide to getting to the French Alps from the UK.
2. Self cater, at least some of the time
Eating out three times a day in a ski resort adds up quickly. A self catered apartment lets you have breakfast and most evening meals in, and treat yourselves once or twice. Stock up at a supermarket in the valley on the way in if you can, as resort shops charge more.

3. Book lift passes online, in advance
Most resorts now sell lift passes online, and many offer a discount for booking ahead or for families buying together. Young children often ski free or at a reduced rate, but the age limits vary from resort to resort, so check before you buy. Beginners may not need a full area pass for the first few days if the resort has free or cheap nursery lifts. Our lift pass guide explains what to look for.
4. Pre book ski hire and lessons
Booking ski and boot hire online before you travel is usually cheaper than walking into a shop in resort, and it saves time on your first morning. Ski school is the one thing you should book as early as possible in half term, because group lessons for younger children fill up. See our guide to saving on ski hire and lessons.
5. Take a picnic up the mountain
Mountain restaurant lunches are one of the biggest daily costs. Many resorts have picnic rooms or sheltered spots where you can eat your own food. Our guide to finding a cheap lunch on the mountain has more ideas.
6. Borrow or buy second hand kit for the children
Children grow out of ski jackets and salopettes almost every year, so there is little point paying full price. Ask friends, look for second hand kit, and save your money for good gloves, goggles and a helmet that fits. Our ski packing list covers what you need.

7. Do not skip proper travel insurance
Standard travel insurance often excludes winter sports. Make sure your policy specifically covers skiing for everyone in the family. We explain what to check in our ski travel insurance guide.

Your half term cost checklist
Use this list to build your own budget. The right hand column shows where the biggest savings usually are.

| Ski hire | Pre book online; take your own helmets if you have them |
| Ski school | Book early; group lessons cost less than private |
| Food | Self cater; picnic lunches; supermarket shop on the way in |
| Kit | Borrow or buy second hand for growing children |

Frequently asked questions
Is there usually good snow in February half term?
Mid February is normally one of the more reliable times of the season, but no resort can promise snow. Higher resorts and those with good snowmaking give you the best chance.
How far ahead should we book a half term ski holiday?
As early as you can. Many families book the spring or summer before. Leaving it until after Christmas usually means less choice and higher prices.
Do children ski free?
Many resorts offer free or reduced lift passes for young children, but the age limit and the rules vary. Some ask for proof of age when you collect the pass, so take passports or ID.
Is it cheaper to go the week before half term?
Only if your school’s half term falls then. If it does, compare both weeks, as the earlier one can be quieter.
