Ski hire in Avoriaz: where the shops are and how to book

Avoriaz is car free and compact, so the best ski hire shop is usually simply the one nearest your apartment or ski school meeting point. There are well over a dozen shops in the resort, most of them part of the big networks. This guide shows who is where, how the networks’ booking terms differ, and what to check before you pay. We have not tested every shop, so treat it as a guide to your options rather than a review.

The short version

  • Book online before you go. The networks advertise big discounts on walk in prices, and you avoid queues in the school holidays.
  • Choose a shop near where you are staying, so swaps and returns are a short walk.
  • Skiset has the most shops in Avoriaz. Intersport and Skimium also have several.
  • Collect your kit the evening before your first ski day if the shop allows it.

How the networks compare

Skiset

Skiset has the largest presence, with shops spread across the resort. Alpine Answers, which sells Skiset hire, advertises up to 45% off walk in prices when you book online, and says breakage and theft insurance is not included online but can be bought in store for about €1 a day.

Intersport

Intersport has two shops, in the centre at Place Centrale and Les Fontaines Blanches. Its booking site advertises up to 60% off online, the seventh day free on qualifying bookings, collection from 5pm the day before your first rental day, a “Zen” option to cancel up to 24 hours before pick up, and the option to change equipment during your rental. Helmets can be booked online.

Skimium and independent shops

Skimium shops include Top Ski on the central square and Avoriaz Sports beside the Prodains cable car. SeeAvoriaz also lists other shops, such as Pelen Sports and Le 720. Compare like for like before choosing.

Choosing by where you stay

  • Festival, Ruches and the centre: the widest choice, within a few minutes’ walk.
  • Crozats: there are shops in the neighbourhood itself, so you need not carry skis through the resort.
  • Amara: Pierre & Vacances lists a Skiset shop in the L’Amara residence, handy for the Proclou beginner area.
  • Arriving by the Prodains cable car: SeeAvoriaz lists Avoriaz Sports (Skimium) next to the cable car.

Ski school and children

The ESF runs the Children’s Village in the Festival area, and Evolution 2 has its base near Ruches. If your children are in lessons, a shop near their meeting point makes the mornings easier. Book lessons early for school holidays. See our ski hire and lessons guide.

We do not currently have an affiliate link with any ski hire company, so none of the shops above pays us.
